Notes on Malay subjects

“Notes on Malay Subjects” is a brief multi-topic note by R. O. Winstedt, K.B.E., C.M.G., D.Litt., F.R.A., published in JMBRAS Vol. 20, Part I (1947), pp. 140–142.

Summary

The note addresses four discrete items. First, Winstedt challenges Roland Braddell’s identification of the Jawi term K.l.nggi in the Kedah Annals with Kalinga, arguing from Jawi orthographic conventions that the double ngg cannot reduce to ng and that no manuscript supports the reading Kalinga (p. 140–141). Second, he translates a genealogical list of Shattariya Sufi masters from a Marsden collection manuscript now held at SOAS, which documents the transmission of the order through Java to Trengganu in the eighteenth century, terminating with Lebai Bidin, an Achinese (p. 141–142). Third, he offers a Kelantan manuscript quotation from a recension of the Hikayat Bakhtiar as confirmation of Brandstetter’s etymology of pantun from an Indonesian root tun meaning “thread” or “in lines” (p. 142). Fourth, he supplies a Maxwell manuscript note identifying the translator of the Hikayat Bustamam and Hikayat Ganja Mara as Saudagar Che Puteh, uncle of Penghulu Che Sahid, who translated the works for Mr. Maingy at Kuala Buka (p. 142).
