Malay names of molluscs
This short note by A. W. Hamilton presents a list of twenty-three Malay names for local mollusc species, compiled during a residence in Singapore and identified by comparison with named material in the Raffles Museum (p. 135).
Summary
The list pairs each Malay vernacular name with its corresponding scientific name, spanning bivalves (e.g., Tridacna ferruginea, Pinna vexillum, Solen malaccensis), gastropods (e.g., Turbo ticaonicus, Murex martinianus, Trochus maculatus), and other groups. Where Dr. R. O. Winstedt had independently recorded the same name for the same species, the letter “W” is appended to the Malay name (p. 135). A footnote clarifies that in one instance Winstedt applied the same name to a different species (p. 136).
