Spolia mentawiensia: Membracidae, Homoptera
This is a brief taxonomic note by W. D. Funkhouser describing and recording Membracidae (treehoppers) collected during a 1924 expedition to the Mentawi Islands off the west coast of Sumatra.
Summary
The note reports on Homoptera collected during a September–November 1924 visit by the Raffles Museum, Singapore, to the Mentawi Group (Siberut, Sipora, North and South Pagi), accompanied by N. Smedley and H. H. Karny (p. 13). Karny is credited with securing the majority of the Membracid specimens.
Funkhouser describes one new species, Anchonoides sordidus, a very dark, nearly black treehopper from Siberut Island, distinguished from A. variegatus by its entirely opaque coriaceous tegmina, swollen suprahumerals, and a distinctly sinuate posterior process extending beyond the internal angles of the tegmina (p. 13–14). The type is a male, 6 mm long, deposited in the Raffles Museum, Singapore. The note also records four previously described species: Leptocentrus reponens Walker, Gargara attenuata Funkhouser, Gargara sordida Funkhouser, and Sipylus dilatatus Walker, with locality and collector data for each (p. 13–14).
