Some notes on Malaysian waders. F.N. Chasen and C.B. Kloss. Records of the Raffles Museum, No. 33
This brief note by F. N. Chasen and C. Boden Kloss (1928) records observations on Malaysian waders, concluding a discussion on Tringa pugnax subspecies in the lesser Sunda Islands and describing an aberrant female painted snipe from Singapore.
Summary
The first portion (p. 68) completes a treatment of Tringa pugnax subspecies in the Sunda Islands, noting that T. p. floris (Sumbawa, Flores, Alor) and T. p. sumbaensis (Sumba) differ only in old males, the latter being black-throated in the brown phase with less grey on the breast and wings sometimes exceeding 100 mm. In the black-and-white phase of sumbaensis the black is much reduced except on the head, and the glossy black throat places these birds in the paradisi section.
Section C (p. 69) describes a female painted snipe (Rostratula benghalensis benghalensis) collected on Singapore Island in November 1927 that is aberrant in having greatly reduced rufous on the head and neck, approaching R. australis Gould. The throat and foreneck feathers are margined with black, the lores are dusky, and the hind-neck rufous patch is only just discernible. The bird is also rather darker above than other females but otherwise typical of benghalensis.
