Some Land-Dayak words
“Some Land-Dayak Words” is a lexical list by G. Beresford Stooke, published in the Journal of the Malayan Branch of the Royal Asiatic Society, Vol. 2, No. 1 (1924), pp. 78–83.
Summary
The document presents an alphabetically arranged vocabulary of Land-Dayak words with English glosses, collected at Tabekang in the Sadong district of Sarawak (p. 78). The list covers a broad range of basic lexicon including body parts, natural features, verbs, adjectives, numerals, kinship terms, and cultural items such as clothing and tools.
A small number of entries include comparative or usage notes: “Puru” is glossed as “a group of ten (Malay ‘puloh’), but only used for numbers twenty and over” (p. 82); “Ngudut” is compared to the Malay “scrobok” (p. 81); and the numeral system is briefly illustrated with “Sa-mohun = ten. Sa-mohun ēndi = eleven” (p. 81). The list concludes with Stooke’s signature (p. 83).
