Some birds of Christmas Island (Indian Ocean). F.N. Chasen and C.B. Kloss. Records of the Raffles Museum, No. 4

This is a short taxonomic note by F. N. Chasen and C. Boden Kloss reporting on bird specimens collected at Christmas Island (Indian Ocean), published in the Journal of the Malayan Branch of the Royal Asiatic Society (1924).

Summary

The note lists 20 bird species recorded from Christmas Island, providing wing and culmen measurements for most, along with brief taxonomic remarks. Several entries note the presence of introduced cage birds (Gracula j. javana and Munia oryzivora). Of particular interest is the record of Butorides striata amurensis, a large-winged northern form described as “perhaps the most interesting addition to the Christmas Island list” (p. 66). The authors also discuss the placement of Sula leucogaster plotus and Sula sula rubripes on geographical grounds, and note that the 1923 specimens of Zosterops natalis differ from the 1904 series in being much whiter below, possibly indicating age-related variation (p. 68).
