This document is the Annual Report of the Council of the Straits Branch of the Royal Asiatic Society for the year 1883, signed by W. E. Maxwell, Honorary Secretary, and accompanied by the Treasurer’s Cash Account prepared by Edwin Koek (pp. xiii–xix).

Summary

The report covers the Society’s financial standing (a credit balance of $1,528.95, including $400 earmarked for a Government geography text), the election of new members (including Prince Krom Mun Dewaowongse Varoprakar and the Rev. R. G. Lawes of New Guinea), and the deaths of Frank Hatton and C. Emerson (p. xiii). It notes that regular periodical meetings have been impossible pending the establishment of a permanent home in the proposed Museum (p. xiii).

The Council reports on several ongoing and proposed projects: completion of a geography textbook under Mr. Skinner’s direction; a plan to republish a selection of papers on the Eastern Archipelago from the journals of the Royal Asiatic Society, Royal Geographical Society, and Asiatic Society of Bengal (with Messrs. Trubner and Co. offering to produce two volumes if the Society subscribes two hundred copies); and the preparation of a skeleton map of the Peninsula at a quarter-inch-to-the-mile scale (p. xiv). The report also includes an appeal to members, missionaries, and naval officers to contribute papers on local customs, folklore, vocabularies, and meteorological observations, particularly in Perak and Kedah where traditional Malay political organisation is rapidly disappearing (pp. xv–xvi). A list of twelve papers published in the Journal since the last general meeting is provided, and the Treasurer’s account is annexed (pp. xvi–xviii).
