Proposed English–Malay dictionary

This notice, published in the Journal of the Straits Branch of the Royal Asiatic Society (Vol. 13, 1884), announces the proposed publication of an English–Malay dictionary by H. C. Klinkert, to be issued by E. J. Brill of Leyden.

Summary

The dictionary is to be adapted from Klinkert’s Dutch–Malay dictionary then in press, and its publication is contingent on securing sufficient subscribers. The Malay transcription follows the Straits Settlements dialect as used by Maxwell and Keasberry, and the English portion will be revised by a native Englishman. The work is expected to run to approximately 1,000–1,200 pages, with a subscription price of £1 5s. bound (p. 274). A companion Malay–English volume is also in preparation. A subscription list was opened at the Raffles Library, Singapore, where a specimen sheet could be inspected (p. 274).
