On some coins found near Seremban

“On Some Coins Found Near Seremban” is a short note by J. B. Neilson describing a collection of forty-four copper coins and eight Chinese tokens recovered from tin-washing operations on the property of Seremban Tin, Limited, approximately five miles from Seremban (p. 466).

The coins span a remarkable date range from 1734 to 1826, suggesting a private hoard concealed in old tailings. Neilson categorises them into five groups: duits struck in the Netherlands for the Dutch East India Company (from Zeeland, West Friesland, Holland, Gelderland, and Utrecht); quarter-stuivers struck for the Netherlands East Indies (1823–1826); duits bearing the Soerabaia stamp; a single English East India Company coin dated 1798 (Mohammadan year 1213); and a Javanese duit of 1810 restamped with the undeciphered letters “L.N.” (pp. 466–469). Neilson notes that the finds appear to be of frequent occurrence in the area and that more valuable coinage may have been diverted by the workmen.
