Miscellaneous notes

This miscellaneous note by W. G. Maxwell (1911) comprises two brief items: a continuation of notes on the Portuguese fleet of 1511 and a short glossary of Malay and Siamese ploughing commands.

Summary

The first section (p. 195) continues a list of Portuguese ships and commanders from the fleet that attacked Malacca, recording events such as the foundering of the Sth. Clara, the loss of Jorge de Aguiar, and the motivation for Albuquerque’s attack—namely Ruy de Aranjo’s release and punishment for Malay “treason” against Diogo Lopez de Siqueira. The second section (p. 196) provides a short glossary of words used to direct bullocks and buffaloes while ploughing—bt (go on), chah (turn outside), so’ (turn inside), rong (turn round), ju (keep quiet), and sorot (back)—noting their Siamese cognates and etymological origins, including the suggestion that so’ is a contraction of masok.
