Marhum Muda Pahang
This short note by W. Linehan identifies a pair of tombstones at the royal graveyard of Makam Chondong (Makam Tujoh Beradek) in Pekan, Pahang, and argues that one of them belongs to Marhum Muda Pahang, a figure referenced in the Perak royal Salasilah (p. 171).
Linehan reproduces a provisional reading of the Arabic-Jawi inscription on one stone, which names “Marhum Muda Abdullah (?)” and contains a standard Islamic prayer for the deceased (p. 171). He then draws on the Perak Salasilah and the Bustanu’s-Salatin to reconstruct the identity of this individual: a Raja Muda of Pahang who married a Perak princess, was installed as Raja, and whose widow and two daughters were later carried captive to Aceh by Iskandar Muda. Linehan proposes that Marhum Muda’s father, “Marhum Pahang,” was the Sultan Ahmad taken to Aceh in 1618, making Sultan Iskandar Thani of Aceh a half-brother of Marhum Muda Pahang (p. 171). He also resolves a chronological difficulty raised by Dr. Winstedt by distinguishing between “Marhum Pahang” (the father) and “Marhum Mangkat di-Pahang” (the ruler who died in 1677), noting that Marhum Muda Pahang died before 1638 (p. 172).
