Kelantan names for bullocks according to their colour

A short note by Anker Rentse listing thirty-four Kelantanese Malay names for bullocks classified by their coat colour, published in JMBRAS Vol. 9 (1931), pp. 143–145.

Summary

The text is a numbered list of colour descriptions in Kelantan dialect, each terminating in a traditional name for the corresponding bullock type (e.g., kerubeng mas for an all-yellow animal, kijang for all-red, jebat for black with white markings, lasat bertuah for a specific auspicious combination). The entries range from simple single-colour animals to complex multi-coloured patterns involving spots, patches, and mixed hues (pp. 143–145).

Rentse notes that the list is an extract of earlier notes written in Kelantanese Jawi by the grandfather of Nik Man, a teacher at Kampong Tengku Temenggong, Kota Baharu, and that some spellings may be uncertain. He cross-references R. J. Wilkinson’s account of similar water-buffalo colour names from Negri Sembilan and C. C. Brown’s article on Kelantan bull-fighting (p. 145).
