Geography of Achin. . Bieber

This is a translated geographical note on the northwestern part of Sumatra (Achin), rendered by Dr. Bieber from a paper by T. C. R. Westpalm van Hoorn tot Burgh originally published in the Tijdschrift van het Aardrijkskundig Genootschap te Amsterdam (p. 120).

The note provides a systematic physical geography of Achin, covering its coordinates, disputed area estimates (ranging from 900 to 1,200 square miles among various authorities), and the volcanic mountain chain (Pedir Daholi / Bockit Barissan) that divides the territory into western and eastern drainage basins (p. 120). It catalogues the principal volcanoes and mountains by name and position, describes the character of the coastlands—swampy and densely wooded on the west, alluvial and creek-intersected on the east—and lists the major rivers of both coasts with notes on their navigability, as well as the principal promontories (pp. 121–123). Bieber notes that Dutch spelling conventions for native names have been retained rather than the Straits system (p. 123).
