An insectivorous hornbill
This is a brief note by J. C. Moulton reporting an observation of an insectivorous hornbill on the higher slopes of Penrissen in Sarawak (p. 158).
Summary
The note records that a hornbill species is fairly common on the higher slopes of Penrissen but apparently found nowhere else in Sarawak. Moulton frames the observation against the general assumption that hornbills are fruit-eaters only, and cites W. T. Blanford’s Fauna of British India (Birds, Vol. III) as the only prior reference to insect consumption by a hornbill, specifically Dichoceros bicornis (p. 158). The text as preserved is a fragment; the species identification and the full context of the observation are not included in the surviving portion.
