Additions to the Malayan flora No. 6. The genus Ornithochilus (Orthidaceae) new to Malaysia
This short note by B.C. Stone records the first occurrence of the orchid genus Ornithochilus in Malaysia, based on a single collection from Gunung Ulu Kali, Pahang (p. 139).
Summary
Stone describes the specimen (B.C. Stone 13916, collected by M.G. Manuel, 30 July 1978, 5600 ft, montane forest) and assigns it to Ornithochilus fuscus Wall. ex Lindl., noting only trivial differences in flower coloration compared to Thai material illustrated by Seidenfaden and Smitinand: the spur is yellow-green with little red, the lip is magenta mainly along the front, the lip-margin teeth are white, and the sepals and petals lack magenta or red veins (pp. 139–140). The genus was previously known from the Himalayas, Burma, Thailand, South China, and Viet Nam. Stone also briefly notes the existence of other species in the genus, including O. moretoni from Australia and two species reported from Viet Nam, and mentions Bentham and Hooker’s suggestion that Saccolabium hillii may belong in Ornithochilus (p. 142).
